The Avoid Chemical Zones setting allows you to exclude roads restricted for chemical transport from the route optimization process. When this setting is enabled, the system will calculate and recommend the most efficient route without using roads restricted for chemical transport, helping you plan routes that comply with your operational or regulatory requirements.

How to Activate Avoid Chemical Zones

  1. Go to the Routing ➝ Configuration menu.
  2. Check the “Avoid Chemical Zones” option.

The Avoid Chemical Zones option in the Routing Configuration page

Once activated, the route optimization will automatically exclude roads restricted for chemical transport when generating routes. When this option is disabled, these roads may be used as part of the generated route based on the optimization result. You can review the configuration used for an optimization in the tooltip beside the Optimize button and on the routing result list.
Avoid Chemical Zones currently applies to Singapore only. The chemical-restricted road data is managed by MileApp — if you want to add or register a road as restricted for chemical transport, please contact MileApp support.
You can disable this option anytime if you want the system to include chemical-restricted roads again in future optimizations.

Restricted Roads in Singapore

The following roads and areas in Singapore are restricted for vehicles carrying hazardous (hazmat) or flammable chemicals. These restrictions are set by the Singapore authorities — NEA (National Environment Agency) and SCDF (Singapore Civil Defence Force) — for safety, protection of clean-water sources, and city traffic management. Vehicles that do not carry chemicals are not affected by the restrictions on this page. There are three types of restriction:

Expressway Tunnels — Restricted 24 Hours

Vehicles carrying hazardous or flammable chemicals are strictly prohibited from entering the following tunnels at any time. Tunnels are enclosed spaces, so a leak or fire inside them is extremely dangerous.

Water Catchment Areas — Restricted 24 Hours

The following roads cross or directly border nature reserves and reservoirs. This restriction prevents contamination of Singapore’s main clean-water sources in the event of a chemical spill.

Central Business District (CBD) — Peak Hours Only

In the city centre, chemical transport vehicles are prohibited during peak hours, unless they hold a permit for direct loading/unloading at that location. Restricted hours:
  • Morning: 07:30 – 09:30
  • Evening: 17:00 – 19:00
The restriction applies to the following roads:
  1. Orchard Road (main shopping district)
  2. Raffles Quay / Raffles Place
  3. Shenton Way
  4. Robinson Road
  5. Cecil Street
  6. Marina Boulevard
  7. Bayfront Avenue (around Marina Bay Sands)
  8. Anson Road
  9. Tanjong Pagar Road
  10. South Bridge Road (Chinatown)
  11. New Bridge Road
  12. North Bridge Road
  13. Bras Basah Road
  14. Nicoll Highway (inner-city section)
By regulation, the CBD restriction applies only during the peak hours above. However, the system currently enforces it at all times (24 hours) for safety — generated routes always avoid these CBD roads for chemical transport, even outside peak hours. If you need time-based enforcement, please contact MileApp support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What happens to my existing configurations after this option is released? A: Nothing changes. Configurations created before this option exists are treated as having it disabled, so previous optimization behavior is preserved until you enable it. Q: How do I know which setting was used for a past optimization? A: Hover the info icon beside the Optimize button or on the routing result list — the tooltip lists all configurations, including Avoid Chemical Zones, as they were used for that result. The result detail Summary view shows it as well. Q: What happens when I plan a route? A: The system automatically avoids the restricted roads and areas above for chemical transport vehicles and finds a permitted alternative route. Q: Can this list change? A: Yes. The list follows the official NEA & SCDF regulations and is updated whenever the regulations change. Q: How do I add or register a road as restricted for chemical transport? A: The chemical-restricted road data used by Avoid Chemical Zones is managed by MileApp. Please contact MileApp support to discuss your organization’s needs and explore available options.
